Polestar roll into action as Goss completes milestone installation of Sunday 5000 presses

Two 96pp Sunday 5000 presses, part of a significant multi-press investment with Goss International, are now fully installed, commissioned and in daily production at Polestar in Sheffield, UK. The time-lapse video, taken by Goss over the whole period of the press installation, demonstrates the vast scale of the operation. The project headed up by Peter Banks, customer service manager at Goss and Jim Algar, operations improvements director at Polestar, consisted of 1500 man days with equipment and personnel from seven different countries.

With the single heaviest piece of equipment weighing in at 43 tons, it took 66 overseas crossings and 202 truck journeys from the US and across Europe to deliver a total of 1371 tons worth of equipment to the Sheffield operation. “A job of this nature really does involve many different components” Banks comments. “To put it into perspective we shipped and delivered 51 Trailers, 38 containers and 38 oversize loads to Polestar, with the press installation alone using 47 kilometers of cable weighing in at 10 tons”.

With the infrastructure soundly in place, Polestar are already running pages for the Radio Times and the Daily Mail’s Weekend magazine supplement on the Sunday 5000 presses with many others lined up for production.

“We are truly excited to be at this phase of the project,” comments Peter Andreou chief operating officer for Polestar. “Starting up these two presses is a huge milestone; it’s amazing to see how the press hall has transformed looking at the two presses now side-by-side.” One 60,000cph 64pp shortgrain press, complete with the SG-3 jaw folder and twin delivery, complemented with a Balloon former section and ribbon stitching heads, is under construction and expected to go into production in the New Year.
