ORAFOL launches new material for vehicle marking

X-Rite Pantone powers spectromatch Eskin to create perfect color matches for prosthetic devices

X-Rite, Incorporated and its wholly owned subsidiary Pantone LLC, and their supplier Spectromatch, announce today that their eSkin technology has been successfully adopted by Royal Preston Hospital, part of the UK’s LancashireTeaching Hospitals network. Royal Preston Hospital uses the specially designed eSkin spectrocolorimeter to measure skin colour and create maxillofacial prosthetic devices that exactly match the patient’s skin tone. Because these prosthetic devices are worn on the face, providing the exact color match means the patient is more likely to feel good about their device and wear it regularly, making a positive difference in the patient’s well being.
Highly automated KBA Rapida 106 with LED drying for Hofmann Infocom

The installation of a highly automated eight-colour medium-format Rapida 106 has begun at Hofmann Infocom in Nuremberg. This is the first medium format sheetfed 4-over-4 perfector in Germany to feature LED-UV curing technology before and after perfecting. Additionally, the press is equipped with a coater after the printing units and a RS 106 reel-to-sheet unit.

Polestar roll into action as Goss completes milestone installation of Sunday 5000 presses

Two 96pp Sunday 5000 presses, part of a significant multi-press investment with Goss International, are now fully installed, commissioned and in daily production at Polestar in Sheffield, UK. The time-lapse video, taken by Goss over the whole period of the press installation, demonstrates the vast scale of the operation. The project headed up by Peter Banks, customer service manager at Goss and Jim Algar, operations improvements director at Polestar, consisted of 1500 man days with equipment and personnel from seven different countries.

Worldwide tablet growth expected to slow to 7.2% in 2014 along with first year of iPad Decline

The worldwide tablet market is expected to see a massive deceleration in 2014 with year-over-year growth slowing to 7.2%, down from 52.5% in 2013, according to a new forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC). At the core of this slowdown is the expectation that 2014 will represent the first full year of decline in Apple iPad shipments. Both the iPad and the overall market slowdown do not come as a surprise as device lifecycles for tablets have continued to lengthen, increasingly resembling those of PCs more than smartphones.

Replacement of listed raw materials

The reasons for innovation in the printing inks sector can vary. In addition to customer requirements, regulatory standards have instigated the search for new formulations with increasing frequency. If this reduces the selection of suitable raw materials, development departments face particular challenges. In January 2014 for example, the monomer N-vinyl caprolactam (NVC) was toxicologically re-classified according to the European Chemicals Regulation REACH (see info box "Regulation on the protection of human health and the environment"). As a consequence, the raw material was also re-classified according to the exclusion criteria of EuPIA (see info box "Voluntary commitment to health protection").

CMA Imaging announces ColorCloud, a unique cloud-based color management solution insuring ink savings, quality control, and color standardization across devices, platforms, and locations. Users pay per click (for each color profile), obtaining profiles that generate highly accurate, repeatable color with superior grey balance, and eliminating the need to make significant investments in hardware or software. Gerardo Cerros, CEO of CMA Imaging, says the company is also offering an option combining ColorCloud with its nanocoated eco-solvent, as well as other, inkjet substrates.
